February Releases

My three choices this month are all the next instalment of series I’ve been following since they began: 1993 for Anita Blake (!!!), 2014 for Wayfarers, and 2016 for Oddjobs.

For the last couple of years, I’ve had various eye conditions that have prevented me from reading ‘real’ books, and my stubborn refusal to mix formats means that I’m a few books behind with the Anita Blake series, and I’ve only read the first two of the Wayfarers series. I’ve had various eye operations, and I’m now within touching distance of being able to actually read the mountain of paper books that have accumulated in that time, so I should be able to catch up very soon. As an aside, for somebody who refused to try Kindle and then said she’d never use it when she got one for her birthday, my Kindle has been an absolute lifeline.

Wish me luck!

The Long Bad Friday [Oddjobs #5]
Heide Goody & Iain Grant

The world’s last day has arrived. Hell itself has come to earth. Streets of fire, rivers of blood and the trains aren’t running on time.

But Morag Murray isn’t going down without a fight. And, as the mother to the anti-Christ, she feels a wee bit responsible.

And she’s not the only one who wants to hold off the invasion. Even some of the Venislarn residents on earth might prefer a world with decent wi-fi and proper coffee to the hell promised by their gods.

And maybe — just maybe — with the aid of a possessed voodoo doll, a fish gangster and her colleagues at the Consular Mission to the Venislarn, they can save something of their world, even after all hope has gone…

Released 5th February 2021

Rafael [Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #28]
Laurell K. Hamilton

Rafael, king of the wererats, must fight to the death to defend his crown. He wants Anita Blake, one of his closest allies, with him as he faces an opponent unlike any he’s faced before. He will ask Anita to risk everything to be at his side.…

But some of the wererats fear that Rafael depends too much on Anita and her ties to the vampires. They believe that there is only room in America for one supernatural king, and Rafael will turn them into nothing more than food for the bloodsuckers.

Among his enemies, a new challenger has arisen who is younger, hungrier, and has dark secrets that could destroy both the wererats and the vampires. Rafael will go into the magical heart of his people to find the power and violence that he needs to save them all, or die trying.

Released 9th February 2021

The Galaxy, and the Ground Within [Wayfarers #4]
Becky Chambers

The stunning finale to the award-winning Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers, author of the beloved The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.

When a freak technological failure halts traffic to and from the planet Gora, three strangers are thrown together unexpectedly, with seemingly nothing to do but wait.

Pei is a cargo runner at a personal crossroads, torn between her duty to her people, and her duty to herself.

Roveg is an exiled artist, with a deeply urgent, and longed for, family appointment to keep.

Speaker has never been far from her twin but now must endure the unendurable: separation.

Under the care of Ouloo, an enterprising alien, and Tupo, her occasionally helpful child, the trio are compelled to confront where they’ve been, where they might go, and what they might be to one another.

Together they will discover that even in the vastness of space, they’re not alone.
